What is a PAC?

The PAC is a powerful group of parents that come together to make a significant change in their communities. We believe that a parents’ voice matters, and when equipped with helpful tools and supportive education, parents can strengthen their families. Because the family is the most important unit on the earth, our goal is to focus on parents and remind them that they are the most important force in their child’s life.

Each meeting is led by a parent that is on the council and follows a system that has brought about great change and results in the community. Combining this with the community cafe model to discuss topics, and The Strengthening Families: Five Protective Factors as the basis for everything we do.

What are the Six Pillars of the Community?

The parents in the PAC came to the conclusion that in order to be effective in our outreach, we must build intentional relationships with leaders in the community who would partner with us to strengthen families. Over time, these people all seemed to fall into one of six categories: Business, Education, Faith-based, Government, Health & Wellness, and Non-profit. This knowledge became an integral part of our work and a core element of everything we do.

I’ve learned that there are a few things that get in my way as I try to grow as a father, professional and parent leader.  Fear, perfectionism, complacency and inability to remain open to new concepts of life are just the beginning.  Yet, they are the primary sources of my irritation with status quo.  In my life, this angst has the power to erode my capacity to organize, adapt and learn new ways of being with community, organizations and my own child.  Thanks to the Parent Advocacy Council, I’m able to own my story, share my shadow and live in an authentic and brave space within this world.  Left to my own devices, I will falter and continue to waiver on my fundamental belief that healing and mitigating risks begin with social justice, reciprocity, shared purpose and collective impact.  

Our local PAC has a way of keeping me connected to something greater than myself.  This group of amazing individuals live life on purpose.  And I glean strength form that force in my life.  As the group co-create an advocacy plan, every voice is included to achieve better community and family outcomes.  It’s within this environment that I let go of deeply held beliefs and biases.  Group member embrace culture, spirituality, background and my unique qualities as they wrap me with protective factors.  Allowing me to guide and lead from the heart. All while encouraging us to honor the fact that together, we will know and do better as a team.  

The doing is how we transfer our knowledge into action.  The PAC realizes that in order produce and cultivate lasting change, we must align our truths and heal from the inside.  The fundamental value is that “we cannot transmit anything we don’t possess within ourselves”.   I am no longer afraid of standing strong.  Mainly because I know I am not alone and there are other parent leaders who will always walk side by side me in the face of all adversity.  

Thanks to the PAC, we have held several advocacy trainings for systems across our State. It is through these engagements that policies related to parent partnerships have been established in communities.  As a parent, I know that the voice of other parents will ensure that all children have safe and nurturing communities they call home.  I’m forever grateful for what the PAC has done in my personal and professional life.  This is what leading with love has accomplished!!

[/et_pb_blurb][/et_pb_column][et_pb_column type=”1_4″ _builder_version=”3.0.47″ parallax=”off” parallax_method=”on”][et_pb_blurb title=”I firmly believe in the need for the Parent Advocacy Council” url=”#” image=”http://www.parentadvocacycouncil.org/wp-content/uploads/2017/12/family-2.jpg” _builder_version=”3.0.92″]I joined the Parent Advocacy Council a few years ago when we started the first conversation about why it would be important for parents. The main idea of the council was to give families a voice and to find networking possibilities.

I became one of the parent leaders to help families who are raising children with trauma disorders.

We meet whenever possible to discuss the many resources our families need but cannot find. After hearing the problems and many concerns about children who had severe and dangerous behaviors, our families became alarmed about the other families who had been coerced by the Division of Child and Family Services into giving up custodial rights to gain residential services for those dangerous children. We were also concerned about how parents had to accept abandonment charges in order to gain those state services. Abandonment charges are a felony and become a record against these wonderful families and it was something we felt needed to be changed.

As one of the parent leaders over this group I asked my legislative representative if he could help me to create and pass a Legislative House Bill to stop the practice of asking parents to relinquish their parental rights in order to gain the state’s help with placing children in residential treatment centers. He did his best to help me but I found that I wasn’t prepared to understand all of the steps involved with creating and passing a House Bill.

I was attending a Parent Advocacy Council meeting and met a lady who worked as a legislative advocate. Her name is Jayceen Craven Walker. I asked her what she did in the legislative process and she told me she helps people who are working through creating new House Bills. I asked if she would help me to do mine and she graciously accepted my call for help. She was amazing and helped me to know what to do in every step along the way. Our House Bill was passed unanimously without any votes against it.

I firmly believe in the need for the Parent Advocacy Council. Bringing information from each individual group helps to find the networking to create a better society.

Families need to have a voice in order for the appropriate changes to happen.
